MY CREATIVE PROCESS
HOW I CREATE MY PATTERN DESIGNS
1. Explore
My design process starts with brainstorming ideas and gathering inspirations from nature, art, fashion, technology, architecture, as well as current and future trends. I write down keywords that best describe the given theme and create a mood board with collected visuals to set the tone and style, look and feel, colours, typography, and imagery. After doing some research in the industry, understanding the product and target audience, I summarize everything in the Creative Brief with your vision and unique identity in mind which serves as the base for the next step: Sketching out ideas.
2. Sketch
Often I start sketching very rough design ideas with pencil and paper exploring line work and shapes, composition and layout. I experiment with different media and techniques, develop motif ideas, and add texture for more depth in my designs. For the next step, I prepare my hand-drawn sketches to turn them into digital illustrations using high-resolution scans or photographs.
3. Design
Using several software, such as Procreate, Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, I design and refine my motifs digitally. The most fun part starts now, building my pattern designs. In this step, I focus on layout and composition. I love to experiment with colours and scale, check for seamless repeats and gather feedback for revisions.
4. Present
Last but not least, I create a presentation sheet to show the development of my new design collection from a mood board to a final (mini) collection of 4-12 pattern designs on product mock-ups. I update my portfolio online on my website, share my artwork to my newsletter subscribers, and showcase selective work on social media.
